1984 (with Henk van den Bergh) The analysis of musical meaning: a theory and an experiment. In: Interface: 13 (1984) 2, 75-106.

Abstract. The present article constitutes the first report of an empirical validation procedure that has been designed to test the Kunst 1978 theory of music listening. Reviewed are, on the one hand, the specifications and enrichments that have been incorporated into the theory along the way, ranging from the more sophisticated metatheoretical framework presented here up to and including a number of "intuitive" practical rules-of-thumb meant to enhance the theory's usefulness as a fact-finding device, and, on the other hand, the returns of the empirical test that has been conducted using part of a Schubert song.

This article was written in 1988 and is published here for the first time.

Abstract. Some observations on music by K.R. Popper, found in his autobiography, are discussed, specifically in relation to his world 3 concept. It is argued that the intuitions embodied in the idea that there is, in fact, an objective world of 'the products of the human mind' (sciences, arts, institutions and the like) are of interest to researchers in the field of music. Firstly, they put current research into a new and fruitful perspective, and secondly, they open up new research perspectives as well.
